Green Tip of the Month

Sustainable Sincerity

Our upcoming Green Scene ("Mayan Marvel," September 2010) contains helpful tips on how to detect greenwashing when perusing "organic" product labels. That's when companies try to unjustifiably tout a product's environmental virtues.

As John Vater, co-ower of Spa Adriana in Huntington, New York, warns, "The big print giveth and the small print taketh away."

Here's some information about avoiding this pitfall:

  • Read labels with a discriminating eye.
John and his wife, co-owner Adriana Vater, caution spa professionals against taking a product label at face value. "If the packaging claims it doesn't contain something, you should ask yourself what's there to do that ingredient's job," Adriana says. "Every component of a product has a purpose, and sometimes a so-called 'green' ingredient is just as offensive as the original."
  • Educate yourself.
The Vaters say it's important to develop an understanding of how product ingredients work. "With today's Internet access, you can quickly look up the chemical composition of any item," John says.

It's not always easy going green. How do you ensure that your spa's environmental initiatives result in real, positive change? Send your ideas to Katie O'Reilly, associate editor, at koreilly@creativeage.com.

Star Treatment: Chocolate Love

Star Treatment

Of all the traditional Valentine's Day treats—a romantic dinner, a dozen red roses, something sparkly—chocolates are the most popular for a reason. They're addictively indulgent and you needn't be in a relationship to enjoy a bite—or a dozen.

This time of year, spas promote treatments that utilize cocoa to attract clients who crave the sweet stuff. "People are drawn to chocolate for the taste and smell," says Sharōn Ronen, owner of Skin Haven Spa Studio & WellSpa in Los Angeles. "It produces endorphins—plus it's good for you."

The healthy antioxidants in chocolate play a role in Skin Haven's Organic Chocolate Truffle Body Wrap
(75 min./$160). Utilizing products from Éminence Organic Skin Care, this decadent treatment envelops clients in layer after layer of gooey goodness. They emerge sweeter—and softer—than ever.

The protocol:

1. Begin with a full-body exfoliation using a cocoa-based sugar scrub. Apply it with a dry brush or exfoliation mitts.

2. Remove the body scrub by using wet towels or a Vichy shower.

3. After drying the client's skin, apply a chocolate-truffle body wrap using wide brushes.

4. Cover the client in warm towels or wrap her with sheets.

5. As the wrap takes effect, perform a scalp massage and foot reflexology.

6. Wash away the body wrap with wet towels or a Vichy shower.

7. Conclude treatment with a full-body massage using a vanilla-scented moisturizer.
