Decorating Tidbits

Let your day spa double as an art gallery. Jae Jampol, co-owner of BodyWise Holistic Spa and Lifetime Wellness Center (www.thebodywiseway.com), suggests "artcycling" as "a fun way to decorate." It also generates exposure for local artists. Periodically select new artists and rotate their work throughout your space. Plus, it gives clients something new to look forward to.

Is your building older than 1978? If so, don't scrape or sand off paint that might be lead-based. It may release dangerous lead particles into the air. Instead, heed the advice from the National Paint & Coatings Association (www.paint.org): Layer a primer directly on top of old paint to seal it, then use an eco-friendly one over the primer.

The EPA estimates that indoor air is 20 times more polluted than outdoor air, even in industrialized cities. For more stats and facts about indoor air quality and what you can do to improve it, sign up for a free e-book, Paint's Dirty Little Secrets, at www.healthylivingpaints.com.

The Mediterranean-designed Tocasierra Spa and Salon has opened at the Point Hilton Squaw Peak Resort in Phoenix. The 10,000-square-foot facility features nine treatment rooms, including an extensive couple's suite with private shower. The spa menu offers a multitude of packages, including one to accommodate parents traveling with children.

The recently opened Spa Luce at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel & Spa in Los Angeles features a modern composition and Artisan craftsmanship. Tiled walls, weathered teak cabinetry and an abundance of natural light promote a soothing environment throughout the facility. One signature treatment offered is the Hammam Ritual, a five-step massage based on the skincare practices of ancient bathhouses. The Japan Ritual is another signature treatment that incorporates therapeutic properties of flower essences with rich minerals.

Rosacea

Spotlight: Rosacea

Rosacea has many faces, which makes it difficult to address. It exists in varying degrees and cycles with periods of flare-ups followed by calm, clear skin, only to be set off again by a trigger. Its ephemeral nature and enigmatic symptoms make it critical that estheticians learn to recognize and differentiate it from other conditions that mimic it, such as acne, eczema, lupus and seborrheic dermatitis. More »

Star Treatment:Spectacular Strawberries

Besides being refreshing and nutritious, strawberries now tout skincare benefits for acne-prone teens. Extract from the sweet fruit has proven to reduce pores and minimize excess oil. Strawberries work as a mild exfoliant because they contain alpha hydroxy acid that promotes skin renewal.

Pevonia has developed a Strawberry HydraBoost facial treatment for preteens and teens. The treatment centers on a mask that contains a strawberry fragrance to help teens relax and move them away from the negative stereotype associated with traditional acne remedies. “The Spa Teen Strawberry HydraBoost Mask smells and looks like strawberry, which takes the seriousness away,” says Tino Lerma, medical esthetic educator for Pevonia. “We don’t want teens to feel like they’re putting medicine on their faces.” More »

Seasonal Promo: A Package for Teens

Getting a teen to commit to anything beyond typing a text message is no small feat. To make the process of establishing good skincare practices easier, teens need to follow regular facial treatments and a disciplined at-home regimen—especially if they have oily or acne-prone skin.

How do spas go about retaining and keeping clients with such a short attention span? “Results,” says Candis M. Siman, owner of Sylvie’s Skin and Body Care in Encino, California.

This September, Sylvie’s is promoting its signature Teen Time Facial (60 min./$85). Clients can purchase a package of six treatments for $450, a promotion available year-round. They also receive a treatment once a month, which includes an exfoliation, extractions and mask application. Clients learn that consistency produces results, such as the clearer complexion many teens long for. “When it comes to teens and acne, they need to realize they can’t sporadically treat it,” Siman says. “We educate them on why they’re breaking out; why their skin is overactive, dry or dehydrated.” More »

Green LightFacility: Let Green Light In
Lighting is a crucial component in creating the proper atmosphere in a spa. Now, many spas choose lighting that helps save the planet and reduces energy bills. For example, did you know that compact florescent lamps use 75% less energy and last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs? More »

Marketing: A Pregnant Pause
Most spas offer at least one treatment that caters to expectant mothers. As fertility rates increase in the United States, so too do the number of women that spas can retain as permanent clients. You can earn their loyalty by developing the right treatments, and by focusing marketing efforts on the health benefits associated with massage during and after pregnancy. More »

Legal : A Sticky Situation

When Feuza M. Dos Reis sent an email to the New Jersey Board of Cosmetology (NBOC) to get more information about the "licensing of waxologists," she could never have foreseen that her inquiry would result in statewide ramifications. In a meeting held June 12, 2007, the NBOC responded to Dos Reis' unassuming question by banning cosmetologists from performing a procedure called the Brazilian wax. It involves the removal of most of the hair from the bikini area. More »
