Skin Deep –The Body Spa (eskindeep.com) in Huntington Beach, California, recently unveiled a series of unique water treatments called the Zen Water Experience. Spa owner Deborah Woods and her husband designed a 1,500-square-foot cave-like sanctuary where clients experience a guided tour through several rooms that offer various water therapies.
Rooms are adorned with bamboo, orchids and intricately textured walls. Inspired by Japanese onsen ritual, this five-stage treatment (45 min/$45) encourages clients to physically, emotionally and spiritually submerge themselves in the healing properties of water. “It’s an opportunity to allow the brain to slow down and focus on the breath,” Woods says.
Before the journey begins, clients place their street shoes in a basket. It’s located in an area inspired by a Japanese genkan, a traditional entryway that symbolizes the separation of work from home. After changing into sarongs, a zen guide leads clients into the rain shower room, where they embark on a series of 18 showerheads specially designed to promote water and energy conservation. “I wanted to recreate the experience of warm rain as if you were standing in the middle of a tropical rainforest,” Woods says.

Even when treatment rooms boast panoramic views of rhythmic ocean waves or snow-capped mountaintops, they vanish from a client’s gaze as soon as she settles facedown on a treatment table. That’s one reason Brian Gay, managing director of Hydroco (hydroco.com), an Australian design and manufacturing company, created the Hydroglass. It’s a glass-bottom, wet treatment table and vichy shower system.
While clients are experiencing treatments, they can gaze directly down at an environment, such as an aquarium filled with exotic fish, or even a sandy desert inhabited with reptiles. “We did one with snakes and lizards because it gives you a sensation,” Gay says. “You may like it, you may not. The idea is to stimulate imagination.”
Inspiration is exactly what Gay hopes to ignite with the launch of the Hydroglass. It can be custom-designed to incorporate an aquarium tank, garden or just about any other environment a spa owner can envision. The 7-foot minimalist table can be finished with stainless steel, wood, tile or any other decorative treatment. “It’s been created to give people freedom to design their own wow factor,” Gay says.

How you treat water areas and how water is treated are important aspects of maintaining a spa facility. Spas can optimize treatment results and increase sanitization in water treatment areas by incorporating a filtration system, says David Fowler, founder and CEO of the Newbury, Florida-based Wellness Enterprises.
Fowler’s company has created one called the Wellness Shower Filter (wellnessshower.com). It purifies and enhances water by adding trace minerals that benefit skin cells and increase their ability to absorb healthy nutrients. The device also helps resist the growth of bacteria and fungus at the point where water passes through the showerhead.
Fowler suggests the following ways spas can purify and enhance water in typical treatment areas:
Pedicure baths Recent media attention has prompted the industry to embrace and intensify the practice of routine disinfecting methods. “The only way to keep that part of the spa safe is to ensure that water is, in fact, chlorinated,” he says.
Baths The piping and circulation that creates jets and bubbles is notorious for the accumulation of bacteria, even when water is drained between treatments. Unfortunately, there’s no way to completely avoid this risk, but some baths are now designed with pipeless air jet technology. Fowler expects this trend to expand in the industry. |
