Trend Watch: Caribbean Crunch Time
There's no excuse for guests to slack off at these four tropical resorts.
For many people, a tropical vacation provides the perfect excuse to hang up the sneakers, turn off the cell phone and spend long days and nights doing little more than lying in a hammock and gazing into the horizon.
Others, however, find it difficult to ease off their regular fitness regimes, and they seek out ways to stay active the minute they arrive at their exotic location. And although most hotels around the world provide some form of gym or fitness programs, a growing number of properties are now offering options way beyond the standard workout class, helping their guests maintain their hard-earned physiques, but with a backdrop of pristine beaches, blue water and nonstop sunshine.
An emerging new trend lies at the luxury end of the scale, with Caribbean resorts bringing in acclaimed fitness experts from popular programs like Barry’s Boot Camp and other well-known gyms back home. Here are four top Caribbean properties leading the way:
Rosewood Little Dix Bay in Virgin Gorda runs four-day Wellness Retreats, which include rigorous programming such as beach boot camps with kettlebell training, Self-Myofascial Release therapy and TRX suspension training. Frankly Fitness® Immersion, taught by esteemed NYC fitness expert Frank Baptiste, features a high-intensity program, while the Revitalize, Refresh, Renew Yoga retreat, designed by famed yoga instructor Johnny Anzalone, covers Core Strength, Choreography of Asana and other classes.
Viceroy Anguilla has devised the ultimate workout for guests looking to build up a sweat during their tropical vacation with Barry’s Boot Camp classes, which run most holiday weekends and are taught by a celebrity trainer from Barry’s L.A. or New York locations.
The Bodyholiday LeSport in St. Lucia runs wellness retreats that kick things up a notch with an intensive two-week long boot camp led by Olympic champion swimmer Sharron Davies, professional coach Ayo Falola and pro athlete Danny Crates.
El Conquistador Resort & Las Casitas Village, A Waldorf Astoria Resort, in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, in partnership with Lisa Taylor of Twist-Life, hosts an immersive four-day health and wellness program designed to build strength and stability with hikes, guided meditation, super-food cooking demonstrations, educational workshops and seminars.
